Formed in 1978 by two individuals wanting to enhance the University of Iowa wrestling fan experience, HAWK is the oldest collegiate wrestling fan support organization. Returning from the NCAA wrestling tournament from College Park, Maryland in 1978, Morrie Adams and Abe Waters conceived to organize a group of individuals similarly interested in Iowa wrestling. Originally consisting of a handful of fans meeting at the original Bread Garden owned by Dan Wilkerson, HAWK has grown to a fan group of well over a thousand members.
Since its inception, HAWK has been focused on providing Iowa wrestling, as well as amateur wrestling in general, with a fan base far surpassing that offered at other universities. In parallel, HAWK provides an avenue for fans and athletes to meet, socialize, and generally celebrate the successes of Iowa Wrestling. HAWK provides not only post-event socials, but has grown to offer regular news updates, travel and lodging for major events, and fund raising events coordinated in harmony with other Iowa wrestling support organizations.
While focusing on the foregoing principles, HAWK has always been focused on maintaining its autonomy from University of Iowa Wrestling due to the ever-changing Big Ten and NCAA rules governing support organizations and post-graduate wrestler funding. HAWK does not accept or solicit contributions to support either University of Iowa Wrestling or post-graduate wrestlers specifically as those roles are currently undertaken by the University of Iowa. As a result, HAWK is able to maintain relatively low dues as membership fees are used solely for the benefit of its members by providing socials and trips. |
